Times of Youth: For those who don’t know about you and your work, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Shyamal Bashak: I am an artist born in Bangladesh. Now I am living at Dhaka Capital of Bangladesh but my home town is Mymensingh. Mymensingh is a historical city and culturally very rich. From my childhood, I was in an artistic circle. My father is an honorable artist of the country. My first teacher was my father. After my school level, I came to Dhaka and got admitted at Fine Arts Faculty of University of Dhaka. Here I completed my M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) degree. My major subject was Print making. But not only print making I like to do work with all media like Painting, Sculpture, Water color and Mixed media. For last few months I am working with Mixed media and Digital painting with many digital painting softwares. Besides painting, I have been doing Graphics design, Animation, Video & Audio Editing from end of 1980. Now, I am working at National Museum of Science & Technology, Dhaka, Bangladesh. My position is Senior Artist cum Audio-Visual Officer.
Times of Youth: How would you describe your work to someone who has never known about it?
Shyamal Bashak: I like to do Human, Humanity, Love and social activities as my paintings subject. I believe art is a strong and universal language to say my “words” to the entire world. That is why I do painting as abstract and semi abstract style. Color and texture is my favorite to use in my painting.
Times of Youth: What sparked your initial interest in arts?
Shyamal Bashak: My father was my inspiration to become an artist when I was a kid. But from young age I have seen political violence, shouting and crying of helpless people of society. That social incrimination inspired me to paint and raise their voice to all over the world.
Times of Youth: At what age did you start doing all this work? Has your family always been supportive of this choice of career?
Shyamal Bashak: Actually I was playing with brush and color of my father after my born. I started painting with my father’s assistance at a time when I first learned to hold pencil and brush, my age must’ve been hardly a year then. After that at my school time I started trying to do painting as school task and for my self interest. That time painting accessories like color, brush, pencil were not available in our country and those are very costly especially in a town out of the capital. That time my father made brushes with horse’s hair collecting from my maternal grand father’s home. So, that time I was doing painting with my father’s handmade brushes. My father was making color for me with his experiences and traditional technique. I first saw professional color and brushes in my life when I was admitted in fine arts faculty. Yes, my family was by my side about doing painting though it was expensive for them.
Times of Youth: Which of your projects are you most proud of and why?
Shyamal Bashak: In 1989, I and one of my friends arranged a mobile “Art Exhibition” for rehabilitation of flood affected people of Bangladesh. We did 5 exhibitions at 5 deferent venues. After that we donate all money of sold paintings to Honorable Prime Minister’s rehabilitation fund of flood affected people of Bangladesh. I feel proud for that project because that was helpful for our poor people.
Times of Youth: Where do you see yourself in next 5 years?
Shyamal Bashak: I will be happy if I will see my name in the list of world’s master artists. But it is my dream. In reality, there’s a very long way to reach my dream. I will be satisfied if I could arrange at least few exhibitions of my paintings at some of recognized cities of the world and say to world “No Blood- No Death- Only Peace” through my paintings.
